Feeding difficulties in children with neurodevelopmental conditions are sometimes casually dismissed as "fussy eating." In reality, feeding is one of the most complex tasks a child performs, requiring the coordination of sensory processing, oral motor skills, postural stability, gastrointestinal comfort and behavioural regulation.

An autistic child may tolerate only a very narrow set of food textures or colors due to sensory hypersensitivity. A child with cerebral palsy may struggle with chewing coordination, tongue control or safe swallowing. Another child may have gastrointestinal reflux or constipation affecting appetite.

Avoid Miracle Elimination Diets

Parents often encounter online claims that completely eliminating broad food groups will cure core features of developmental conditions. While allergies and intolerances should be medically diagnosed, extreme restrictive diets can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies, especially in children whose food variety is already limited. Nutritional modifications should always be individualized and nutritionally sound.

Watch for Feeding Red Flags

Contact your paediatrician or feeding specialist if you observe:

  • Persistent coughing, gagging, choking or throat-clearing during mealtimes.
  • Recurrent unexplained chest infections or pneumonia.
  • Poor weight gain, growth faltering or progressive weight loss.
  • Mealtimes routinely lasting longer than 45 minutes with significant distress.
Next Steps

If feeding, swallowing, food selectivity or growth is a concern, discuss it openly during your developmental consultation rather than treating it in isolation.
