Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)

Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is a type of brain dysfunction caused by a reduction in the supply of oxygen and blood flow to the brain, most commonly occurring around the time of birth.

Clinical Overview & Pathophysiology

Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) is among the most serious perinatal events, resulting from temporary deprivation of oxygen and blood perfusion to the neonatal brain. The secondary phase of HIE involves mitochondrial stress and delayed neuronal apoptosis. At Dhi Amrutam, our intensive neuro-restorative protocol combines cranial scalp acupuncture with neuro-developmental facilitation. This promotes micro-vascular neo-angiogenesis, protects penumbral neural tissue, and guides dormant brain zones to take over damaged functions through neuroplasticity.

Key Symptoms & Presentation

  • Altered Muscle Tone: Severe hypotonia (floppy newborn) in early stages, often evolving into spastic hypertonia or dystonia.
  • Feeding & Oral-Motor Difficulties: Weak sucking reflex, uncoordinated swallowing, and frequent choking episodes.
  • Delayed Reflex & Milestones: Diminished Moro/grasp reflexes, delayed head control, rolling, and sitting.
  • Neonatal Seizures & Irritability: Jitteriness, cyclic bicycling limb movements, or clinical seizures in the newborn period.
  • Sensory Deficits: Visual tracking difficulties (cortical visual impairment) and auditory processing delays.

Potential Causes & Risk Factors

Umbilical cord prolapse or compression, placental abruption, uterine rupture, prolonged obstructed labor, maternal severe hypotension, or severe neonatal respiratory failure.

Diagnostic Assessment & Evaluation

Sarnat HIE staging review, neonatal brain MRI (diffusion-weighted / basal ganglia involvement), pediatric neurological examination, and ongoing milestone tracking.

Integrative Treatment Strategy

Micro-needle pediatric scalp acupuncture over motor/sensory/visual cerebral projection lines, Pediatric Motor Rehabilitation, Craniosacral unwinding, Sensory Integration, and Feldenkrais therapy.

When to Seek Clinical Consultation

Begin integrative neuro-stimulation immediately following medical discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to maximize the critical early neuroplastic recovery period.
